Home Web-site Design Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0
Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0 PDF Print E-mail

Internet technologies are continuously evolving. Prior to the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001 we lived essentially in what has been termed the Web 1.0 environment. Since then more innovation things have evolved in to what has been called Web 2.0 (or second version).

It is difficult to define the differences between Web 1.0 and 2.0, but they are characterised by the changes listed below:

Web 1.0 Features
Web 2.0 Features
reading writing
companies communities
client-server peer-to-peer
HTML XML
home pages blogs
portals RSS
wires wireless
owning sharing
web forms web applications
dialup broadband
hardware costs bandwidth costs
file based webs data-base based webs

As far as web-site design is concerned the industry has moved away from the static content delivery in Web 1.0 where the site owner manages the web publishing, to a more community-based two-way information interchange scenario in the Web 2.0 environment. Technologies such as blogs (comes from the shorthand for web log which is a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order with articles written by the blog owner, but commented upon by the wider community), RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds and entire web-based two-way applications are common in today's web.
